BAGHDAD – Three-hundred and two noncommissioned officers and civilians from the Iraqi Army, Iraqi Ministry of Defense and Kurdistan Regional Government graduated from specialty courses as part of Basic NCO and Civilian Intelligence training at the Intelligence and Military Security School at Camp Taji, March 31.
Upon completion of basic intelligence training, which ended in late February, the students were separated into six specialty classes, said U.S. Air Force Maj. Christopher Michals, United States Forces-Iraq’s senior intelligence advisor with Iraq Training and Advisory Mission-Ministry of Defense at Camp Taji.
“These specialties are collection management, counter-intelligence, human intelligence, geo-spatial intelligence, intelligence analysis, and reconnaissance and surveillance,” said Michals, a native of Buffalo, N.Y.
Since the first basic intelligence course graduation in 2006, the class size has grown exponentially.
“When I came to the school in 2006, there were only 30 graduates from this course,” said Donald Get, director of ITAM-MoD.
Of the 302 graduates, 35 NCOs are Kurdish Regional Guard Brigade soldiers.
This is the second basic intelligence course in which RGB soldiers trained in Taji alongside their Iraqi counterparts, said Michals, who has been with the school since early January.
The biggest hurdle in integrating RGB with Iraqi Army students is the language barrier, Michals said.
“We had very few Kurdish students who could speak Arabic,” Michals said. “They needed a translator to translate all the material and instructions.”
To help resolve some of the language issues, school leadership brought in two graduates from the previous course to properly translate training materials for the RGB soldiers.
From here, most of these graduates will go back to their units to begin serving in their new career field. Some graduates will continue training in advanced intelligence skills.
