CAMP ISHINONAKI, Japan- Soldiers from Logistics Task Force 35, U.S. Army Japan, are currently working with the Japanese Ground Self Defense Force to supply victims of the March 11 earthquake and tsunami with fuel. ‘Operation Warm Wind’ consists of soldiers delivering fuel via military trucks to displaced Japanese citizen camps in north eastern Japan as part of Operation Tomodachi daily.
Spc. Rufo Lujan-Espinosa, a driver for the operation said,“The fuel is used to keep their generators running, so they can have light at night and stay warm.”
Lujan-Espinosa, also a unit supply specialist with 10th Support Group, USARJ, said that the JGSDF provides kerosene, diesel and gasoline.
Lujan-Espinosa, a native of Talofofo, Guam added, “They give us the fuel and we help them deliver it because they are stretched so thin.”
The general consensus among LTF 35 soldiers is that the operation and cooperation are going very well.
“It’s great working with the Japanese,” said Staff Sgt. Elio Martinez, a fuel tester with 505th Quartermasters Brigade out of Okinawa. “I just wish the circumstance was different.”
Lujan-Espinosa agrees with Martinez thoughts.
“It has been awesome so far,” Lujan-Espinosa said. “The amount of work and cooperation we have all put in is definitely ensuring that the fuel is going where it needs to go.”
Martinez said the Japanese are very appreciative of their help, but he said it is his honor to serve and help them.
“It makes me feel good,” the Miami native said. “We go to a lot of these sites that are all wiped out like cities where only the foundation of the buildings remain which is very sad. It really is an honor to help such resilient people. It is nice to know that you are really making an impact.”
U.S. military relief efforts are ongoing.
