FARAH CITY, Afghanistan - Provincial government officials and members of the Farah Provincial Reconstruction Team gathered Feb. 19 during a ceremony held in Farah City to honor the accomplishments of 180 young women who graduated from a 10-month course in English and computers.
The Farah Department of Education accredited the course, which was taught by the Farah Humanitarian Organization for Local Development, or HOLD, an Afghan non-governmental organization focused on empowering women through socio-economic development activities and educational programs.
“Knowing how to speak English and to use computers connects these young women of Farah to the world, which will give them more opportunities,” said Ali Mohammad, director of HOLD in Farah.
Many of the graduates said they had aspirations to attend higher education and to use their new computer skills in the workplace.
For one graduate, Amina Noorai, the course means hope for a brighter, more peaceful future not just for herself but for Afghanistan.
“Unfortunately, we’ve been living in war because people are uneducated,’ Noorai said. Once people receive an education, I think we can have peace and a better life. This course will help my classmates and I go to college and move forward in life.”
