PARRIS ISLAND, S.C. - The Officer Voluntary Early Release Program, signed into effect March 31, offers the chance for company grade officers to move their end-of-active-service dates under Marine Corps Administrative Message 209/11.

A similar program has been offered to enlisted Marines, said Maj. Shawn Haney, public affairs officer for Manpower and Reserve Affairs. This is the first time it will be offered to commissioned personnel.

Like the Voluntary Enlisted Early Release Program, OVER provides Marines with the chance to move their EAS up to 90 days before the original date, Haney said.

This program is only available to company grade officers with an EAS date between April 1, and Sept. 30, 2012 who have less than six years on active duty.

Officers using the program will be considered as finished with active duty requirements, according to MARADMIN 209/11. However, it will not exempt them from their reserve duties.

Marines must be eligible for an honorable or general (under honorable conditions) discharge and have all separation counseling and medical evaluations completed.

The program is not available for Marines who are indebted to the government in any way, on terminal leave, pending adverse administrative action or using any other early release program through Headquarters Marine Corps, Haney said.

Any officer suffering from symptoms of post-traumatic-stress disorder or signs of a traumatic brain injury will not be eligible for the program until all processes are completed or a waiver is submitted, as per MARADMIN 209/11.

Officers with a career designation or who are scheduled to deploy at the time of requested early EAS date will not be eligible to submit.

Requests should be passed to battalion or squadron commanding officers at least 30 days before the requested date to allow time for processing.

Before taking part in the program, officers who are interested are encouraged to look at the available options after active service, to include the Montgomery and Post 9-11 G.I. Bills and participation in the Selected Marine Corps Reserves.

The Selected Marine Corps Reserves is currently looking for company grade officers of any military occupational specialty for a variety of positions, including platoon or company commanders.
