PARRIS ISLAND, S.C. - The brass band ensemble of the Parris Island Marine Band traveled to Francis Marion University in Florence, S.C., to perform at the Arts International Festival.

The eight-man ensemble presented New Orleans-style jazz and soul and Dixieland tunes in the Adele Kassab Recital Hall.

When the performance filled every seat, incoming audience members found places to stand to see and hear the show. By the conclusion of the high-energy performance, every audience member joined in an enthusiastic standing ovation.

“It went really well. I was concerned about how the turnout was going to go, but I’m glad the crowd was into it and interacted,” said Gunnery Sgt. Jay Dalberg, the small ensemble leader. “You never know how these things are going to go.”

By the end of the presentation, audience members were singing, and some, even dancing.

“Sometimes we have to ask the crowd to clap with us, and today we were like. ‘Hey, the crowd is clapping – let’s clap with them,” Dalberg said.

The ensemble is widely known for its diverse music assortment and expertise with brass instruments.

“If you came here expecting to hear military marches, you’ll be disappointed,” Dalberg said to the audience at the beginning of the presentation. “We’re doing things a little bit different today, ladies and gentlemen.”

Among the listeners was a retired gunnery sergeant Jim Gleason, a former Parris Island Marine Band musician.

“These guys are working pros,” said Gleason, who was so proud of the performance it had him almost in tears. Gleason’s background gave him a genuine and unique appreciation for the show. “What a lot of people don’t realize is the 40 minutes we just watched was at least 200 hours of rehearsal.”

The performance, although only 40 minutes of the festival, drew the largest audience of all the musical performances.

“I was impressed with the theater itself,” Dalberg said. “It was a really nice musical setup. The stage was a little small and we were worried we were going to be too big for the venue.

“It really could not have gone any better.”
