BAGHDAD, Iraq - Sometimes unpredictable events lead to unique opportunities.
The soldiers of C Troop, 6th Squadron, 9th Cavalry Regiment, 2nd Advise and Assist Brigade, 1st Infantry Division, United States Division – Center found this to be true as they received their 1st Cav. Div. combat patches, April 11, from Col. Douglas Crissman, commander of the 3rd AAB, 1st Cav. Div.
The day prior, members of 6th Sqdn., 9th Cav. Regt. received their combat patches from Col. Paul Calvert, commander of the 2nd AAB, 1st Inf. Div., USD-C; the commander of the brigade that currently has tactical control of Saber Squadron in Iraq. However, most of C Troop could not attend this ceremony as they were called to conduct a mission in support of Operation New Dawn. Likewise, Crissman’s arrival to Camp Liberty for a leader’s conference was delayed by weather.
These circumstances allowed Crissman to personally present C Troop soldiers with their Cav combat patches signifying their current and future service during this deployment.
“We look forward to having you back in our formation. That said, you are fulfilling an important mission here in Baghdad, and we continue to hear great things about what you have already accomplished,” said Crissman.
Saber Squadron troopers have been deployed in support of Operation New Dawn for nearly three months and is currently serving as the USF-I operational reserve in Baghdad.
For many of the soldiers receiving their 1st Cav. Div. patch, this is their first combat patch and deployment.
“This unit has a long and great history, and it’s an honor to be a part of this team and to wear this patch,” said Spc. Greyson Kirk, from The Colony, Texas.
The 9th Cav. Regt., was formed in 1866 and has participated in many of the United States’ military operations. 6th Sqdn., 9th Cav. Regt. has deployed in two previous deployments in support of Operation Iraqi Freedom.
“It’s a privilege to deploy with this squadron again and to continue to wear this patch,” said Spc. Kevin Hoback, of Prescott, Ariz.
Even though some uncontrollable events kept both C Troop and Crissman from participating in the squadron patch ceremony, the troop formation offered a unique opportunity to recognize the service of current soldiers of Saber Squadron and to honor the service of previous soldiers who have worn the 1st Cav. combat patch.
