MARINE CORPS RECRUIT DEPOT, S.C. -- Local residents participated in the fifth annual Iron Mike History Tour, April 16, aboard Marine Corps Recruit Depot Parris Island.

Named after the Iron Mike monument located at the intersection of Boulevard De France and Santo Domingo St., the tour is hosted by the Parris Island Historical and Museum Society. It offers its participants an insiders view of Parris Island and a chance to take in the historical significance of the area.

“The tour is a way of exposing the community to the rich history of Parris Island,” said Mark Brittingham, a member of the Parris Island Historical and Museum Society and retired Marine warrant officer. “It’s a way of sharing the Marine Corps with them and showing that nothing that goes on here is secret.”

The history tour came in two forms – a walking and a bike tour. Stretching 14 miles, the bike tour encompasses most of the historical landmarks on Parris Island, including treks out to the Charlesfort-Santa Elena National Historic Landmark , golf course and the rifle ranges.

The walking tour led participants through the monuments and landmarks nearest mainside, including the historic district and Peatross Parade Deck.

“The number of people who come out here is always amazing,” said George Biszak, president of the Parris Island Historical and Museum Society and retired Marine colonel.

“People who come on the tour really get a feel for the cultural and historical significance of this place,” Biszak added. “They find there’s always so much more than they thought.”

At certain points throughout the tour, members of the Parris Island Historical and Museum Society took time to offer in-depth explanations of some of the sites, sharing their own experience and insight.

Trudy and Glen Cunningham, residents of Hilton Head, came to take part in the bike tour.

“(Glen) used to be a sailor, so I wanted to come and just see what it was like for the military,” Trudy said. “We’re really excited to come out here and see some of the history.”
