    5th Armored Brigade

FORT BLISS, Texas – Renowned as the U.S. Army’s premier trainers, First Army continues its momentum in exposing its observer controller/trainers to the most current techniques and foreign military practices by deploying its professional trainers into the combat zone.

Recently, Staff Sgt. Eric Hammer, an OC/T with the 1st Battalion, 360th Infantry Regiment, “Warhawg,” 5th Armored Brigade, returned from Kabul, Afghanistan where he was a member of an 18 man trainer-mentor team that trained and mentored the Afghan National Army.

“I volunteered because I think this is a vital mission that will lead to Afghanistan being able to self-sustain,” said Hammer.

His team worked closely with the ANA training and mentoring battalion-sized elements on basic soldiering skills including map reading, land navigation, and marksmanship.

“We partnered with the ANA and mentored company and platoon leadership and conducted training to prepare them for rapid deployment,” added Hammer. “The most beneficial part of this deployment was learning how to partner with the ANA.”

Now that he is back from his deployment, Hammer is currently training and evaluating joint war fighters on the urban operations lane and buddy team live fire ranges at McGregor Range, N.M.

Hammer hopes that his experience with the ANA will help him to better prepare key leadership in the rotational units to immediately assess capability and assist their ANA counterparts in their area of operation.

“This information can be passed on to the joint war fighters to better prepare them for partnering with the ANA units they will encounter,” said Hammer.

Hammer expresses gratitude for his wife and three children who have supported him throughout all of his deployments.
