    FORT LEONARD WOOD, Mo. – Veterans of the 31st Engineer Battalion Association and soldiers of the 31st Engineer Battalion will hold a unit plaque unveiling at 10 a.m., May 6, in the Engineer Regimental Room at the John B. Mahaffey Museum, Fort Leonard Wood.

    John Frye, executive director, 31st Engineer Battalion Association and Vietnam Veteran, is scheduled to be the guest speaker for this event.

    The 31st Engineer Battalion Plaque was commissioned by battalion members and veterans to recognize the sacrifice and service of the soldiers who have proudly served the battalion since its inception on July 1, 1940.

    The plaque will remain on display in the museum’s Engineer Regimental Room for all past, present and future soldiers, and the general public.

    The 31st Engineer Combat Battalion landed in France on Dec. 31, 1944, at the height of World War II. The unit participated in Ardennes-Alsace, Rhineland, and Central Europe Campaigns. After World War II, the battalion was deactivated for five years after which it was called back to duty.

    During the Vietnam era, the unit earned a Valorous Unit Award, Meritorious Unit Award Commendation, and the Republic of Vietnam Civil Honor Medal for its participation in the Tet Counteroffensive, Sanctuary Counteroffensive, Consolidation and other campaigns. The battalion was deactivated after its service in Vietnam.

    The 31st Engineer Battalion currently serves under 1st Engineer Brigade at Fort Leonard Wood, Mo. It is a One Station Unit Training Battalion for combat engineers and bridge crewmembers. The battalion takes pride in transforming civilian volunteers into engineer soldiers.

    Veterans and the general public are invited to attend the plaque unveiling.
