MARINE CORPS AIR STATION CHERRY POINT, N.C. – Maj. Andrew S. Burchfield, an AV-8B Harrier II pilot with Marine Attack Squadron 542, 2d Marine Aircraft Wing, based out of Marine Corps Air Station Cherry Point, will perform an AV-8B level III flight demonstration during the 2011 Naval Air Station Pensacola, Fl., Air Show, May 3. Burchfield will also perform at the Ocean City, Md., Air Show, June 11.
The Harrier level III demonstration is one of the most sought-after aerial demonstrations offered by the U.S. military. Demonstrations are performed by the same aircraft and Marines who train and deploy in support of real-world contingencies, including ongoing operations in Afghanistan.
Burchfield, a native of Vienna, Va., is one of a small, select group of pilots who are hand-picked by Headquarters Marine Corps to demonstrate the capabilities of the AV-8B Harrier II to the public.
The purpose of level III demonstrations is to show the American public the skills of their Marine pilots and the capabilities of the world famous vertical-takeoff jet.
Burchfield is currently the executive officer of VMA-542.
