ROBINSON MANEUVER TRAINING CENTER, Ark. – Approximately 190 soldiers and airmen were called onto State Active Duty to lend a hand in communities hammered by tornados and severe weather in Faulkner, Garland and Carroll Counties the evening of April 25.
Troops from the 189th Airlift Wing, 39th Infantry Brigade Combat Team, the 77th Theater Aviation Brigade, 142nd Fires Brigade, 87th Troop Command and the RMTC Installation Support Unit supported civil authorities with search operations, route clearance, evacuation, and security and traffic control.
Missions began late, April 25, after tornados struck the Faulkner County town of Vilonia and in the vicinity of Hot Springs Village in Garland County. An evacuation notification mission in Carroll County due to flooding began the morning of April 26.
Missions began to wind down the morning of April 27 with a reduction of troops. The National Guard support in Vilonia dropped from a peak of 110 soldiers and airmen to approximately 30 as of April 27 to provide security.
Another 60 troops worked in Garland County to clear routes with heave equipment to include a frontend loader, wrecker, bulldozer and two backhoes. Twenty soldiers were assigned to the mission in Carroll County.
Guard troops worked in coordination with local authorities and the Arkansas Department of Emergency Management. As of April 27, there have been 30 State Active Duty missions ranging from water missions and fire-fighting missions to support for the Governor’s inauguration and winter weather response.
