QAISAR, Afghanistan – Soldiers from major ground and air units in northern Afghanistan participate in training to improve air/ground integration April 29.
Troops from the U.S. Army 4th Combat Aviation Brigade, 4th Infantry Division and 1st Battalion, 84th Field Artillery Regiment, 170th Infantry Brigade Combat Team conducted the joint familiarization training on Combat Outpost Qaisar.
“We talk and work every day but it’s great to put faces with radio voices,” said Chief Warrant Officer Four Nicole Hayes, an AH-64D Apache Longbow helicopter instructor pilot assigned to 4th CAB. “The payoff is huge and we see if we can do more for them.”
According to Hayes, building a relationship is important.
“There is no substitute for a face-to-face,” added Hayes. “Supporting the ground unit is our job and there is nothing better than providing that support.”
The training focused on the utilization of aviation support as well as having ground soldiers being comfortable on the radio.
“It helps with communication,” said U.S. Army Capt. James Thornton, battery commander, A Battery, 1st Battalion, 84th Field Artillery, 170th Infantry Brigade Combat Team. “Anytime you can bring in an asset, there is a whole new understanding of what they are doing.”
Units assigned to ISAF Regional Command North continually participate in joint training in order to sharpen and hone-in skills to be used in any situation.
