NEW ORLEANS – The first Marine Corps Security Augment Force class of 15 Marines graduated a modified version of the Navy Augment Security Force course here, April 18.
This new force is expected to set up and support the security of the new Marine Corps Support Facility New Orleans when it opens in June.
The original ASF course was mostly geared toward training Navy security guards along with the occasional Marine.
The SAF is all Marines with duties that will include more security details and patrols, and even limited law enforcement support.
The Marines will not have arrest authority. However, if they are present in the event of an arrest they are prepared and authorized to help in apprehension.
The SAF certification course consisted of classes on security and law enforcement skills, marksmanship, detainee handling and non-lethal techniques followed by exercises.
As part of their training the Marines were also exposed to Oleoresin Capsicum, a chemical compound commonly used for riot control that irritates the eyes to cause tears, pain and even temporary blindness.
“The OC spray kind of sucked, but I wanted to do it anyway,” said Lance Cpl. Carl Spoor, a MarForRes data network specialist now certified as an SAF Marine.
“This is one of the best classes I’ve ever had,” explained Robert Flores. Flores is a Marine Corps Police trainer with 16 years of experience. “Every one of the students volunteered. They came because they wanted to train.”
More courses are slated throughout the coming year in order to meet the security needs of the new facility.
