CAMP LEJEUNE, N.C. - Nearly 4,000 men, women and children of all ages are competing for cash prizes and bragging rights – striving to be some of the best bowlers that North Carolina has to offer.
Bowling aficionados from all across North Carolina have been competing at Marine Corps Base Camp Lejeune’s own Bonnyman Bowling Alley for the 2011 North Carolina State United States Bowling Congress Association Open Championship, since April 22.
“We have a handicapped, scratch, women’s and an open division, which anyone can compete in,” said Vernon Swaim, manager of the Bonnyman Bowling Alley. “They’re trying to win money, but also bragging rights for their teams.”
Swaim said the teams simply bowl three games, add up their scores and the highest scores win.
Christine Wilson, assistant manager at the Bonnyman Bowling Center and avid bowler, said so far, she has met dozens of people from all over North Carolina who just came to bowl. Wilson hopes to compete in the tournament as well, just for old times’ sake.
“I’m going to bowl in this tournament. When I first moved here, I had never in my life bowled before until my boss taught me how,” said Wilson. “Now, I’ve been bowling for 11 years and I’ve been doing tournaments in Milwaukee, Reno and Las Vegas.”
With thousands of bowlers of various skill levels, countless pins await, until the conclusion of the tournament next month, June 12.
“This is our second week of bowling and everyone seems to be having a good time so far,” said Swaim.
