BAGHDAD—Soldiers with the 299th “Lifeline” Brigade Support Battalion, 2nd Advise and Assist Brigade, 1st Infantry Division, United States Division – Center travelled to Joint Security Station Deason, Iraq to train soldiers with the 17th Iraqi Army Division in cooperation with the Niva Ford dealership, a Ford-licensed dealer in northern Iraq and Baghdad region, on maintenance for Ford vehicles and the use of the “Launch X431” scanner.

Throughout the last six months, the 299th BSB has conducted several similar training sessions with members of the 17th IA Div. in order to train them on all aspects of logistics, from supply and maintenance to operations.

The Ford training started in the classroom with the combustion theory, automotive sensors, actuators, and types of fuel, and coolant and oil used in automotive applications. The training later advanced to hands-on exercises using a 2009 Ford F-350 Super Duty truck and the X431 scanner.

“The classroom instruction and practical application of the X431 scanner provided the students with a new skill set to maintain their F-150 trucks, along with an enduring capability,” said Lt. Col. Todd Reed, executive officer of the stability transition team with 1st Battalion, 63rd Armor Regiment, 2nd AAB, 1st Inf. Div., USD-C.

The remainder of the training focused on the proper use of the X431 scanner, and instructed officers and soldiers with the 17th IA Div. on the proper connection, operation, and diagnosis of faults using the machine.

“This is the first time we have seen this level of interaction with the instructor,” said Staff Sgt. Jeff Wernholm, non-commissioned officer in charge of the Logistics Training and Assistance Team with Company B, 299th BSB and a Caspian, Mich., native. “It was amazing!”

“It is a good benefit for us,” said Lt. Mohamad Basil Jabar, an electrical-mechanical-engineer officer with the 17th IA Div. “Until this training, we knew very little about Ford trucks and the auto scanner.”
