Members of the Mississippi Army National Guard's 114th Army Liaison Team (114th ALT), headquartered in Greenville, Miss., were honored at a sendoff ceremony in Hattiesburg, Miss., May 18.
The ALT was formed Dec. 1, 2000, to fulfill an Army requirement for Tactical Liaison Teams to be posted in both the active and reserve components. The team deploys to provide staffed and experienced personnel to assist with command, control, intelligence and logistics on the modern battlefield.
"Remember Ghraib," said Col. Robert S. Thomas said to the 15 Soldiers preparing to deploy. Thomas, currently commander of the 66th Troop Command, Jackson, Miss., was commander of the 114th ALT when it served its first deployment in Dec. 2003. The unit distinguished itself by providing assistance to the Headquarters of Multi-National Forces Iraq and performing as the Garrison Command of Forward Operations Base Abu Ghraib.
According to Thomas, the unit achieved the building up of Abu Ghraib from a dumping ground area to a visibly successful detainment center recognized by some of the military's top leaders at that time.
"I know you can do your job, you have proven that, now go and be just as successful in your mission. Remember, Ghraib!", said Thomas to the soldiers of the 114th ALT.
While supporting Operation Enduring Freedom, the 15-member team will be guiding and assisting the forces of the United States, NATO, Afghanistan and Pakistan. The team's families will be waiting for their return next year.
