KABUL, Afghanistan – Air Force Col. Curtis M. Winstead assumed command of the International Security Assistance Force/Base Support Group in a ceremony here May 19, presided by Polish Maj. Gen. Boguslaw Samol, ISAF Deputy Chief of Staff for Resources.
Winstead, a 1980 Biloxi High School graduate from Mississippi, is deployed from the Air Force Academy where he commanded the Air Force ROTC Northwest Region.
As the new BSG commander, he’s responsible for the external and internal security for the HQ ISAF Camp and acts as camp commandant for the HQ ISAF compound. In his capacity, he provides combat support, health service support, infrastructure support and combat service support to all organizations and branches contributing to the HQ ISAF mission. This includes planning, coordination, execution, and command and control for all NATO and contributing nation personnel and life support activities based on the camp.
Due to growing up a military brat and being on the move, Winstead said he doesn’t really call one place home. The son of retired Lt. Col. Maurice and Margret Winstead, the colonel has notched nearly 26 years of active-duty military service.
As a combat weatherman, the colonel has supported the Army Infantry School, the 75th Ranger Regiment, the 18th Airborne Corps, and the 82nd Airborne Division and has previous deployment experience. In 2003, he deployed to Operation Iraqi Freedom supporting coalition ground forces as the Expeditionary Weather Squadron commander during the initial invasion, and again in 2007 to 2008 as a military advisor to the Iraqi National Security Council during the successful surge to bring security to the people of Iraq.
He took the reins of the HQ ISAF BSG from Col. Loren "Skip" Johnson, who returned to his command of the 137th Space Warning Squadron, Greeley Air National Guard Station, Colo.
