BAGHDAD – Soldiers with Headquarters and Headquarters Company of 2nd “Dagger” Advise and Assist Brigade, 1st Infantry Division, United States Division – Center competed in a weightlifting competition May 1 and May 7 at Camp Liberty, Iraq.

Sgt. 1st Class Marcus Carter, the fires NCO in charge with HHC and a Lawton, Okla., native, and Sgt. Michael Demello, targeting NCO with HHC and a Southington, Conn., native, started the competition between each other in November 2010.

“The more we talked about it, the more interest peaked until it expanded into a company event,” said Carter.

Eventually, the competition manifested into a two-day competition between eight weight classes, with day one focused on the bench press and day two focused on the dead lift.

Twenty-nine soldiers competed in the bench press competition and 25 in the dead lift.

“I was very excited to participate in the bench press event,” said Pfc. Kasey Duchene, communication helpdesk technician with HHC and a Kankakee, Ill., native. “However, what I was really interested in was seeing what my opponents brought to the table during the competition.”

The competition focused on the percent of weight lifted in relation to a soldiers body mass.

“I prefer doing dead lifts since the lift requires strength being used throughout the entire body,” said Maj. Jake Atkins, information operations officer in charge with HHC and a Milan, Ill., native. “Dead lifts first use your calves, hips, glutes and all those muscles groups have to work together to perform the exercise.”

At the end of both competitions, the first and second place winners were presented with medals and all competitors received gifts donated by fitness companies for participating in the event.

“I received some workout supplies, a book, and some apparel,” said Staff Sgt. Andrew Bucchin, psychological operations planner with HHC and a Wichita, Kan., native.

“Overall the event was a lot of fun and allowed all of us soldiers to engage in some healthy competition, while conducting some quality physical training,” said Demello.
