    Story by Sgt. Edwin Rodriguez

    7th Transportation Brigade (Expeditionary)

KANDAHAR AIRFILED, Afghanistan - Meet Sgt. Mark Williams, a White Plains, Md., resident, serving at Kandahar Airfield, Afghanistan, with the operations section of Task Force Resolute.

Williams works in the operations section as a transportation Noncommissioned Officer. He is responsible for the accountability of military and host nation truck movement throughout Regional Command South, Southwest and West. He also keeps track of the brigade primary security detail when they leave outside of Kandahar Airfield. He reports all incidents, and movement to Joint Sustainment Command Afghanistan. He believes in the work he is doing on Afghanistan.

“It is a great resource to have; to understand who is moving where throughout the area,” said Williams. “Our mission is for a good cause, even though I miss home.”

Missing him as well from the U.S. is his wife, Megan, and a son to be named later. During his two-week rest and relaxation trip, he will go home in hopes to see his son’s birth.

“My wife is expected to give birth around the end of June,” said Williams, ecstatically. “I hope that the timing is right and I don’t miss it.”

Williams has been in the Army for five years, and this is not the only time he has been away from home. He Was in Kuwait a few years ago for a 15-month tour, and just recently, last February, he was on a humanitarian mission to Haiti after an earthquake hit the island. The hardest part for any Soldier is being away from your loved ones.

“I joined the Army to instill discipline and structure in my life. I really felt I needed it, but I understand the Army and its deployments. But even still, it can be real difficult being away from my family.”

Williams just recently married in July 2010.

When not working, Williams takes time away from work to go to the gym, study for the Sgt. Audie Murphy Club, take college courses and communicate with his family as often as possible.

When asked what he looks forward to most during this deployment, Williams added, “Going home on R&R, I can’t wait to see you honey.”
