Zabul Mobile Diplomacy Shura indentifies challenges, creates renewed dialogue in Zabul
KABUL, Afghanistan - Senior Ministers from the government of Afghanistan joined coalition leaders and the Zabul provincial governor for a mobile diplomacy shura in the Deh Chopan and Sha Joy districts, May 23.
The purpose of the engagement was to provide a forum for dialogue between local shura members and officials from every level of the Afghan government to discuss solutions for security, governance, and development.
During the shuras, local citizens expressed their support for government of Afghanistan security and development initiatives, but cautioned that insurgent intimidation has discouraged cooperation from some citizens.
Provincial Gov. Mohammed Neseri told citizens that every person must do their part to protect themselves against insurgent intimidation.
“Afghan and coalition forces are here to help you,” said Neseri. “But it’s the people that will make the real difference. Insurgents cannot intimidate citizens if everyone is united in defending their homes and their villages.”
Local elders also pressed Afghan and coalition leaders for development projects in their districts to enhance the local economy and assist with creating jobs for local people. Neseri emphasized that security was the first step toward bringing development, commerce, and more capable governance for local citizens.
“If we achieve better security and learn to protect ourselves, we can send our children to school, build roads, and sell goods in the bazaars,” said Neseri. “Everything begins with security, and we all have a responsibility to protect ourselves, our neighbors, and fellow citizens.”
