PARRIS ISLAND, S.C. - Reading is known to be fundamental to academics, but now it can send a family of four to the destination of their choice through the Summer Reading Program.
The program, established by Marine Corps Community Services libraries and Headquarters Marine Corps, offers a summer program that encourages not just children, but adolescents and adults to pick up some books this summer by offering the opportunity to win prizes, said Rose Marie Kauss, librarian on the depot.
The 2011 program for the Tri-Command area, titled Midsummer Knight, will run from June 6 through Aug. 5 and will offer prizes ranging from water bottles to backpacks.
Base libraries will also have one grand prize each for the person who reads the greatest number of books, Kauss said.
Young children will get a prize after every three books they read, and readers age 11 and older will receive a prize for every 600 pages they read during the summer.
The grand prize, provided through HQMC, is a vacation package of $2,000 for a family of four to any Delta Airlines travel destination. One winner will be selected out of every eligible participant on the East Coast and one from the West Coast.
Registration be done both online and physically at the library. The winner will be announced through the Internet.
Having people update what books they are reading and put in their own information makes the process easier, Kauss said.
Along with the summer reading program, the base libraries offer a variety of programs for children, parents and base personnel.
Every Wednesday, a group reading is held for children and their parents at the Parris Island library on the second floor of Building 283, Kauss said.
Books and Blankets is another program for families in which children can come dressed for a slumber party with blankets, pajamas and stuffed animals. The event will take place at the Parris Island library June 2, and it will have stories, crafts and complimentary snacks.
For adults looking to break down any language barrier, the library also offers the Mango Language program for free. This program uses audio, visual and vocal lessons to help students learn a new language in a natural way.
Until construction on building 283 is complete, anyone looking to participate in programs should call the libraries for information on where programs will be held.
