NEW ORLEANS -- Fourth Marine Aircraft Wing has a new Sergeant Major due to Sgt. Maj. Paul Anderson stepping down and Sgt. Maj. Courtney Curtis stepping up to fill that role during a relief and appointment ceremony at the World War II museum, May 26.
“Sgt. Maj. Anderson was a bulldog who was focused on the welfare of the Marines,” said Maj. Gen. Rex McMillian, the commanding officer for 4th MAW. “He carried out the Marine Corps tradition that is exemplified in this museum.”
Sgt. Maj. Curtis has huge boots to fill, he added, both physically and figuratively, as Anderson is 6-foot 7-inches tall and has led the Marines with pride and success during his time as sergeant major of 4th MAW.
“He’s helped us go through that transition in building an operational air wing and an operational reserve,” he said.
Anderson, with a total of just over 33 years of experience, had one piece of advice to offer the new sergeant major.
“I would just like to say get on the road, if your wife approves,” he said. “Get out of the office and see your Marines.”
In reference to his plan of action as the new sergeant major, Curtis said, “My idea is to outreach to all squadrons. I want to bring equal opportunity Marines and public affairs Marines with me and help spread the gospel.”
He said he wants to be with the Marines and get out to the community as well.
“My largest message is community outreach and maintaining Marine Corps standards,” Curtis said.
