WASHIR, Helmand province, Islamic Republic of Afghanistan - The Afghan National Army have begun a large scale independent operation to take back the district of Washir in Helmand province.
The 1st Kandak, 2nd Brigade, 215th Corps of the Afghan National Army is leading the clearing operation that contains minimal support from coalition forces.
Afghan Uniformed Police are embedded into the Afghan National Army unit. The police have been patrolling the village informing locals that the police and army are there to stay and protect them.
Upon arrival into the district the ANA found deserted streets. Further patrolling revealed local citizens returning to their homes.
The ANA’s presence in Washir will provide security while the district government establishes itself. Washir’s district chief of police and district governor arrived Wednesday.
This presence will prevent insurgent fighters and the enemies of peace in Afghanistan from using this district as a safe haven while they travel to eastern districts such as Sangin.
Many improvised explosive devices have already been discovered however there have been no casualties. There have not been any direct engagements with insurgents or armed individuals.
The operation began on Monday, 6 June.
The 2nd Brigade is the newest unit in the 215th Corps and is partnered with the U.S. Marine Regimental Combat Team 8.
