    Story by Sgt. Lizette Hart

    19th Public Affairs Detachment

WARDAK PROVINCE, Afghanistan – U.S. special operations forces discovered two homemade explosives labs in Musa Khely village, Sayed Abad, June 12.

SOF team members discovered two homemade explosives labs while waiting for their damaged vehicle to be moved to a safe location and destroyed in place.

The first lab contained 400 pounds of ammonium nitrate and 15 jugs of diesel fuel. The second lab consisted of 400 pounds of ammonium nitrate and 200 to 300 gallons of diesel fuel.

Ammonium nitrate is a fertilizer commonly used in the manufacturing of improvised explosive devices.

The explosive materials were discovered in the same vicinity where 600 pounds of ammonium nitrate were recovered in mid-April.

The vehicle had irreparable damage from a pressure plated IED strike less than two hours earlier. No personnel were injured in the IED attack.

The ammonium nitrate and the damaged vehicle were destroyed in place.

No civilian casualties or structural damage was reported.
