FORT HUNTER LIGGETT, Calif. - Army Reserve units participating in the Combat Support Training Exercise 91 11-01 at Fort Hunter Liggett conduct joint operations with an Army National Guard unit, the 109th Regional Support Group out of Rapid City, S.D. The 109th is the only National Guard unit to participate in this year’s exercise.
After a combat mission for the 109th Regional Support Group was changed, the RSG began a search for another combat-related mission. They attended an initial planning conference in Texas and found an opportunity with the Army Reserve during CSTX 91 11-01.
The RSG will run the mayor cell on Forward Operating Base Schoonover. Lt. Col. Mike Oster, executive officer for the RSG, said they have around 50 soldiers on the ground.
“We are very excited to be part of this,” he said. “My understanding is this is kind of a new exercise at Fort Hunter Liggett.”
That is not to say that the exercise itself is new, however.
“They have been doing this at McCoy. This is the Guard’s first time being a part of it. We would love to see it expand,” Oster said.
Oster stated this is their first exercise out of state. For the past 25 years, the 109th has hosted Exercise Golden Coyote in South Dakota.
The Army National Guard and the Army Reserve typically focus on different missions, but this is an opportunity to show that they are both part of the same team.
