    Story by Sgt. Betty Dodd-Rogers

    372nd Mobile Public Affairs Detachment

Staff Sgt. Thomas H. Andrews has always enjoyed taking care of soldiers. He started out as an infantryman March 1997, and after some years he decided to take that a little further. Andrews decided to go through the selection process to become a Reconnaissance Marine.

As part of his Marine training, Andrews completed an eight-week course for scuba diving at Pearl Harbor, Hawaii.

“This was the most challenging school I ever attended,” Andrews said. “It is not for everyone.”

After staying in the Marines for 15 years, he decided to leave the military because he wanted to watch his son grow up and spend more time with his family, he said.

During his break in service, he worked as a general contractor. After his son reached adulthood, Andrews felt the need to do something more. Because he had always enjoyed serving in the military and had missed training the troops and the camaraderie between soldiers, he started the process to rejoin the Marines.

In Andrew’s small hometown of Chester, Mass., everyone knows everything about everybody, so all the locals knew he wanted to reenter the military. One day a family friend, a captain in the Army, discussed Army Reserve programs with Andrews and his wife, Teresa. Andrews became intrigued when their friend explained that he could be an Army Reserve soldier and stay home with his family. This option convinced him to enlist in the Army Reserve; he joined three-and-a-half years ago and has had no regrets, he said.

He is now 50 years old, assigned to the 822nd Movement Control Team in Boston, Mass., and looks forward to mobilizing with them in the fall. After tour completion, he will pursue an Active Guard Reserve position.

With the love and support of his wife of 16 years, Andrews feels like he can do anything and is looking forward to retiring and living on his farm in Chester, Mass.
