KANDAHAR AIRFIELD, Afghanistan - Soldiers and airmen from companies and battalions across Task Force Resolute enjoyed a break from the rigorous operational tempo of Afghanistan to celebrate the Army’s 236th Birthday at the TF-Resolute motorpool here, June 11.

The event kicked off with a few words from Col. Lawrence Kominiak, the TF-Resolute commander, and the cutting of the Army Birthday cake. Brig. Gen. Philip Fisher, the Joint Sustainment Command Afghanistan commanding general, then designated Master Sgt. Valerino Cortinas and Pfc. Jane Crosby, the oldest and youngest soldiers in attendance, respectively, as the official cutters of the Army birthday cake.

“We are here to enjoy a day of food, camaraderie and celebrate the birth of our Army,” said Kominiak. “Every soldier here should be proud of what they are doing; you are contributing to the mission here in Afghanistan.”

After the cake cutting, soldiers got a chance to enjoy barbecued chicken, ribs, hamburgers and hot dogs, a piece of birthday cake and assorted soft drinks. Attendees also played basketball, played catch, threw a Frisbee, danced or just enjoyed each other’s company.

“It’s always fun to get together and enjoy a day of fun, especially in a deployed environment,” said Staff Sgt. Leon Fuata, the Headquarters and Headquarters Company, Special Troops Battalion, TF-Resolute training room non-commissioned officer in charge. “I hope there will be more in the future. Happy Birthday, Army!”
