FORWARD OPERATING BASE EDINBURGH, Afghanistan – Two Marines with the 2nd Marine Logistics Group (Forward) disbursing section were moved to Forward Operating Base Edinburgh, Afghanistan, to open an office June 1.

“We want to support the warfighter where he is in the fight,” said Master Sgt. Brian Garland, the 2nd MLG (Fwd.) disbursing chief.

The new office offers troops with the option of pulling money from their paychecks as well as offers check cashing to Department of Defense contractors.

“[Warfighter Express Services] Teams were the only option for troops to get money, and they only come out about once a month” said Lance Cpl. Austin Jones, a disbursing clerk at FOB Edinburgh. “Now the troops can just come over here, get money and buy what they need from the exchange.”

In addition to providing troops with cash, the disbursers at FOB Edinburgh are perfectly located to support unit paying agents throughout the area. UPAs are responsible for making payments for the Commander’s Emergency Response Program.

“The program funds stuff like building schools and hospitals and other small projects throughout the area,” said Cpl. Calvin Tarbox, the non commissioned officer in charge of the disbursing office at FOB Edinburgh. “It also funds the Field Ordering Officers with money to buy supplies for FOBs like building materials, water pumps and generators.

“Most UPAs are platoon commanders or officers so for them to leave their patrol base to travel to Camp Leatherneck to get funds is difficult,” said Tarbox. “Now that we are here, we can travel to the patrol bases and fund them, which cuts the delay down about a week.”

The disbursing office can also assist troops with the savings deposit program and managing allotments.
