CAMP AL TAHREER, Baghdad -- A change of command ceremony for the 40th Iraqi National Guard Brigade was held at the ING compound, Dec. 8.
ING Maj. Gen. Mudhir Mawla Abood turned over his command of the 40th ING to Brig. Gen. Jaleel Khalaf Shwail.
The ceremony started at 10 a.m., as several contingents of ING troops marched in formation in front of the podium and VIP chairs, escorting their colors to the center of the small parade ground.
After the playing of the Iraqi national anthem, Abood presented the brigade colors to Shwail, as his effective date of command was read aloud.
"The 40th Brigade is the backbone of the new Iraqi military," Abood said, through a translator. "I charge the new brigade commander to continue to better the brigade and work toward bringing peace to Iraq."
Abood, who retired from the Iraqi Army in 1991 as a brigadier general, offered his skills to the new Iraqi military by joining the Iraqi National Guard in December 2003. His successor promised to continue Abood's work.
"I make my promise to all of my people, all of Iraq that I will continue to work toward peace in Iraq," Shwail said.
Senior leaders of the 1st Cavalry Division were in attendance. They included Maj. Gen. Peter Chiarelli, the commanding general; Brig. Gen. Michael Jones, assistant division commander-maneuver; and the division's senior noncommissioned officer, Command Sgt. Maj. Neil Ciotola.
