SYDNEY, Australia (June 30, 2006)—Army Reserve soldiers from three military police units that served in Iraq were spotlighted on the Sunrise show, a nationally syndicated morning news show in Australia, today.
The units are in Australia at the invitation of the Australian Reserve Forces for joint training and ceremonies in conjunction with Australia's Reserve Forces Day. MPs were invited this year to celebrate the 90th anniversary of Australia's Military Police, formed in 1916 during World War I. Also participating are MPs from the United Kingdom and Canada.
The three American units sending a total of 27 soldiers here are the 415th MP Detachment from St. Louis, Mo., the 306th MP Battalion from Uniondale, N.Y., and the 339th MP Company from Davenport, Iowa. The units were selected to participate on the basis of their outstanding service while deployed to Iraq last year.
The units of each nation formed up in the chilly winter morning outside the Sunrise studios in downtown Sydney, each unit flying its nation's colors. One soldier from each country was interviewed, "man-on-the-street" style by Australian weatherman Grant Denyer. American MP, Spec. Valerie Bleckman of the 415th, was asked briefly about her experiences in Iraq and the Army Reserve.
On July 2nd, the American MPs will participate along with thousands of current and former Australian Reservists in the National Reserve Forces Day Parade in Sydney.
