MARINE CORPS RECRUIT DEPOT PARRIS ISLAND, S.C. -- The third annual “Feds Feed Families” food-drive campaign began July 1 at the Marine Corps Recruit Depot Parris Island Commissary and will remain until Aug. 31.

The drive was started in response to the “United We Serve Act,” signed by President Barack Obama in 2009, calling on Americans to contribute by serving in their communities. Locally, the initiative is directed by the Office of Personnel Management, and the theme for this year’s drive is “Feeding families one fed at a time.”

“I believe that the military in general is a very giving community,” said Cindy Six, commissary director. “This drive is a great way for them to give back to the local community.”

Last year federal employees from around the country who participated in the food drive donated 1.7 million pounds of nonperishable foods. This year’s goal is to collect 2 million pounds nationwide.

However, Six said the Parris Island commissary’s goal is just to get maximum participation.

“What we want is to get the most that we possibly can to support the community,” she said.

Once the drive is over the donated food from the commissary will be placed on palettes and transported to a local food bank.
“We want to do as much as we can for our local food bank,” Six said. “We want to show that we care.”

Although all nonperishable foods are welcome for donation, the drive has specific items that are sought after.

Canned fruits, canned vegetables, multigrain cereal, grains, snacks and hygiene items are among the most needed.

“I believe that anyone in the military, around the military or who works with the military really does care about the community,” said George Wills, commissary administrator. “With their help we can make this drive very successful.”
