JOPLIN, Mo. — The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers July 7 completed construction of temporary facilities to replace Joplin Fire Department’s Fire Station 4.
Fire Station 4 was severely damaged by the EF-5 tornado that struck the Joplin area May 22. Fire Station 2, also destroyed by the tornado, was handed over to the city July 1.
The Corps awarded a $552,693 contract to Intelligent Investments Inc. of Neosha, June 16, to provide and build facilities for both stations. Construction of the facilities at Fire Station 4 began June 18.
The temporary facilities at Fire Station 4 include a 24-by-36 modular structure with two bedrooms, two offices, a full bathroom, full kitchen and a common area; a garage to house two fire trucks and gear; and a storm shelter to accommodate four people, the number of firefighters at the station at any given time.
Following a natural disaster or emergency, the Federal Emergency Management Agency may direct the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers to manage construction of temporary critical facilities under the National Response Framework. That mission can include building temporary fire stations, schools, medical facilities and more, depending on the needs of the impacted communities.
