NEW ORLEANS – Dozens of Marines gathered at the Force Theatre here, June 17, for Marine Corp Mobilization Command’s deactivation ceremony.
The closure of Marine Corps Mobilization Command is part of a Department of Defense effort to save taxpayer dollars by consolidating its facilities.
“We save on manpower and dollars by condensing under one roof,” explained Brig. Gen. Roger Machut, outgoing commander of Marine Corps Mobilization Command.
Marine Corps Mobilization Command’s history dates back to July 15, 1965 with the establishment of Class III Reserve Branch, Marine Corps Reserve Data Services Center, Division of Reserve. The command was given its current name, April 1, 2004, when the Marine Corps Support Activity, Kansas City, Mo., was merged with the Marine Corps Reserve Support Command. One year later, 2005 Base Realignment and Closure Commission directed the closure of MCSA and the relocation of the MCRSC portion of Marine Corps Mobilization Command from Kansas City, Mo., to New Orleans not later than Sept. 15, 2011. In 2006, the Commander, Marine Forces Reserve initiated a major revision of the MarForRes headquarters and the headquarters of it major subordinated commands, including MOBCOM. In 2010, the Commandant of the Marine Corps approved the MarForRes reorganization initiative as recommended by his Force Structure Review Group. In 2011, COMMARFORRES directed the commanding general of Marine Corps Mobilization Command to take action to ensure that Marine Corps Mobilization Command could be deactivated during the summer of 2011.
In June, Marine Corps Mobilization Command was deactivated and the smaller Marine Individual Reserve Support Organization, led by Col. Ivan Glasco, stood up in its place.
Marine Corps Mobilization Command’s successor will continue the administrative support it provided to Marines in the Individual Ready Reserve, a category of the Reserve force who have completed their obligated active duty service and are subject to recall when needed. Marine Individual Reserve Support Organization will provide administrative screening of IRR Marines in order to maintain up to date contact information for possible recall to active duty. They also provide limited training opportunities and family readiness support for IRR Marines.
“We will be doing the same missions but with less people, which saves the Marine Corps money,” said Maj. Tom Nelson, officer in charge of the readiness branch of MIRSO.
By developing the efficiencies and restructuring its personnel, MIRSO will staff approximately 50 Marines and civilians as compared to the larger Marine Corps Mobilization Command, which had more than 300 Marines.
Marine Corps Individual Reserve Support Organization will be based at Marine Corps Support Facility New Orleans and will fall under the command of Marine Forces Reserve as a separate staff section.
