FORWARD OPERATING BASE SALERNO, Afghanistan – The chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff and his senior enlisted advisor visited with service members stationed at Forward Operating Base Salerno, Afghanistan July 28.

Marine General Peter Pace and Army Command Sgt. Maj. William J. Gainey spent two hours touring FOB Salerno and visiting with service members here.

The two officials began their tour with a visit to Soldiers of the 4th Battalion, 25th Field Artillery Regiment, 10th Mountain Division, to watch the firing of 155mm Howitzers. Afterwards, the two guests signed high-explosive Howitzer rounds that would be used in future combat operations.

"I came a long way to say two simple words to you and that's 'thank you,'" said Pace. "This thing started here about five years ago when a bunch of people decided they were going to attack the United States of America. That was a bad Idea," he continued.

The general went on to describe the positive changes he has noticed Afghanistan since his last visit and attributed the changes to the Soldiers standing before him.

Next, he and the Command Sergeant Major were taken to the tactical operation center conference room where they were briefed on current and future plans to work with the Afghan Government to build peace and stability in the nation.

"We know we are winning, but the fight is far from over," said Lt. Col. Scott Heintzelman, Executive Officer for the 3rd Brigade Spartans. "We're going to places we have never been before and taking the fight to places the enemy has never expected us."

Before boarding the C-130 aircraft that brought the two visitors here, they toured the field medical hospital to visit with injured troops and thanked the medical staff for a job well done.
