MOSUL, Iraq -- Spc. Terry Young, driver, 549th Military Police Company received a Silver Star from Lt. Gen. Peter Chairelli, ground commander in Iraq, at Forward Operating Base Marez, Mosul, Iraq July 24.
Young received the Silver Star for his reaction to a suicide vehicle borne improvised explosive devise that detonated between two Coalition Force vehicles at Iraqi police station Northeast Two, April 22, 2006.
"I saw Young get out of the Humvee that was on the right side of the road and run behind it so that he could provide cover for an armored security vehicle," said Sgt. Tyler Holt, squad leader, 549th MP Co. "Young then unhooked his gunner from the safety harness, because of his injured hand and pull him out of the vehicle and into a bunker close by. Young went back and pulled the injured medic back into the bunker too."
According to Holt, Young then ran up to the Armored Security Vehicle and found disoriented Soldiers, he told them what to do to get out of harms way. Young then proceeded to a vehicle that was in danger of becoming engulfed in flames and moved it out of the way.
"Young is an outstanding Soldier, he showed a lot of bravery out there He is willing to do what ever it take to accomplish the mission," said Holt.
"It is something I have always wanted to do since I was a kid," said Young. "I joined the Army as early as I possibly could, so that I could come in and serve my country. I did it because I know that these guys would do it for me. I just did it because I am a Soldier."
