GALVESTON, Texas – The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, Galveston District, awarded a contract July 8 to Manson Construction Company in the amount of $7,988,500 for the dredging of the Galveston Entrance Channel, Inner Harbor and Houston Ship Channel south of Redfish Island.

Contractors will remove approximately 2.8 million yards of shoal material from the channels, ensuring the waterways remain open for navigation.

“The Galveston and Houston ship channels play a critical role in the local communities as they generate jobs and opportunities that allow businesses to flourish,” said Karl Brown, an operations manager with USACE Galveston. “This dredge work allows us to fulfill our mission of keeping waterways open, making way for commercial vessels to navigate to the various ports which contribute to the economic strength of the nation.”

According to Brown, the contractor will begin dredge work in areas where high shoaling has occurred, placing material from the project in offshore placement areas.

“Placement of the dredged material offshore will extend the life of the critical San Jacinto and Pelican Island placement areas, as they were most recently used during the deepening of the Galveston Ship Channel and are currently being drained for use during future dredging projects,” said Brown.

According to Brown, the project is one hundred percent federally funded with work scheduled to begin in September 2011.

USACE Galveston District was established in 1880 as the first engineer district in Texas to oversee river and harbor improvements. The district is directly responsible for maintaining more than 1,000 miles of channel, including 270 miles of deep draft and 750 miles of shallow draft as well as the Colorado River Locks and Brazos River Floodgates.
