JOINT BASE ANDREWS, Md. - Naval Air Facility Washington hosted a successful Employer Support of the Guard and Reserve luncheon and awards ceremony for local employers on July 13.

Employer Support of the Guard and Reserve is a Department of Defense liaison agency with staff and volunteers in every state whose mission is to provide information and consultation for both employers and service members in ensuring a strong partnership.

“To be the coordinator this event was challenging, but my team of seven sailors and their continued help over the few weeks made it a success.” said Lt. Mamadou Ndaw, coordinator of the ESGR event for NAF Washington. “There were a lot of moving parts from getting the guests on Joint Base Andrews to sending invitations and catering, but these sailors came through.”

In attendance, there were over 50 employers of Reserve and Guard personnel and 26 awards were presented by the ESGR for their continued support of the Guard and Reserve.

The luncheon and following tours of military aircraft and equipment provided an introduction to employers of the Naval Reserve Forces and the tools that helps reservist complete their mission.

“I think today’s event was very informative for the employers and to see how our military soldiers continue to serve on their reserve obligation,” Sgt. Tamisha McSears, Pentagon police officer and employer of reservist personnel. “The static displays were interesting to see up close and see how the equipment is utilized for our reserve members.” continued McSears.

With the conclusion of the tour, service members and civilians alike felt the experience and knowledge gained from the ESGR brief would leave a lasting impression.

“I feel that it was important for my employer to see what I do as a reservist and share a part of my experience,” said Petty Officer 1st Class Avonne Collins, activated reservist at NAF Washington. “My boss and I established a stronger relationship from this luncheon as far as a respect of the work and military missions.”

“When a function such as ESGR is a success, the credits start with the planning committee,” continued Ndaw. “We thank all the employers who accepted our invitations.”

Established in 1972, the ESGR operates via a network of hundreds of volunteers 4,700 within 54 field Committees throughout the United States. Over 245,000 hours were volunteered to raise awareness of the law for the Guard and Reserve members and their employers.

Since the start of Operations Enduring Freedom, Iraqi Freedom and New Dawn, Reserve Components have activated 777,000 service members, with 94,000 currently serving in all branches and all locations worldwide. The Navy Reserve has over 5,000 activated service members as of July 6.
