FORT LEONARD WOOD, Mo. -- The 14th Military Police Brigade at Fort Leonard Wood held a change-of-command ceremony, July 22, at Gammon Field here. Col. Jerry Stevenson transferred command of the brigade to Col. Kevin Vereen.
Prior to the change of command, Stevenson, who has served as the brigade’s commander since July 2009, received the Legion of Merit Award and the Military Police Regimental Association Silver Marechaussee Medallion.
Brig. Gen. David Phillips, U.S. Army Military Police School commandant thanked Stevenson for his service and for taking on the responsibility to oversee the training of thousands of MP troops to prepare for battle. Phillips added that the Military Police Corps is better today because of Stevenson.
“Command has been the greatest honor our nation and the Army has bestowed upon me, and I stand here today feeling privileged to have had an opportunity to lead some of the finest soldiers, NCOs and officers in our organization’s ranks,” Stevenson said.
Stevenson credited his wife and family, and those who maintained a belief in him and his abilities as cornerstones to his success. “I would also like to thank my brother for instilling in me a healthy sense of competition,” Stevenson joked.
As he addressed his command and unit members, Stevenson added, “It has been a privilege to serve with you—you are the reason this is the land of the free and home of the brave.”
As he welcomed Vereen back to Fort Leonard Wood, Phillips indicated his confidence in Vereen’s ability to carry forth the mission of the 14th MP Brigade.
Vereen commented that it is great to be back in Missouri and part of the Fort Leonard Wood family; and to lead troops who have stepped forward to serve our great nation.
Following the ceremony, an outdoor reception was held to welcome Vereen and his family back to the installation.
The mission of the 14th MP Brigade is to train and provide combat ready, disciplined, motivated, physically fit and technically competent warrior police soldiers and leaders to combatant commanders inculcated with the Army values and Warrior Ethos; capable of immediately contributing to their next unit's mission, and able to survive in any environment.
