CAMP ATTERBURY JOINT MANUVER CENTER, Ind. — Camp Atterbury will welcome a new unit to the community mid-August as the 157th Infantry Brigade moves in from Fort Jackson, S.C. The unit is scheduled to unfurl the brigade colors during a ceremony in Building 4, Aug. 15.

The unit held a casing ceremony at Fort Jackson June 23 after nearly 14 years on the installation. Before coming to Camp Atterbury, the 157th Infantry was responsible for training National Guard and Reserve soldiers for mobilization. Moving here allows the brigade to help streamline the soldier training process in several ways, said 157th Infantry Brigade Commander Col. David Bushey.

“The execution of the First Army Transformation Plan means that brigades, which traditionally spent many months of the year travelling to Mobilization Training Centers and preparing deploying units for battle, now actually live where they will train,” he explained. “This move will save First Army hundreds of thousands of dollars in soldier travel expenses.”

The unit is no stranger to the mission they are continuing here. The “Falcon Brigade” has provided training for more than 50,000 soldiers in deploying BCTs from South Carolina, Mississippi, Georgia, Tennessee, Minnesota, Iowa, Vermont, and Pennsylvania along with numerous separate companies and battalions.

The soldiers of the 157th are ready to continue providing quality training for those deploying, said Bushey.

“Our soldiers have been transforming themselves to match their new jobs as lane trainers – arming themselves with the latest tactics, techniques and procedures from theater. Never in the brigade's history has it been more ready to provide cutting edge, sophisticated training,” he said.

Bushey added, the members of the unit are looking forward to living and working in the local community.

“We have worked at Camp Atterbury in the past, while training the 86th IBCT from Vermont. Many of our soldiers were here from August 2009 until February 2010. The citizens in the surrounding community are wonderfully hospitable and have treated us with the utmost respect - Hoosiers are hard working, Patriotic folk like us and we are going to love being here year round,” Bushey said. “I am going to encourage all of our soldiers and family members to sink their roots down in this community and serve during their off-duty time as well - we want to make a positive contribution.”
