CAMP ARIFJAN, Kuwait – The 1st Battalion, 34th Infantry Division, Brigade Special Troops Battalion, Minnesota Army National Guard, took command of Camp Arifjan’s Zone Six Camp Command Cell from the 197th Fires Brigade, New Hampshire Army National Guard, Aug 3.
“From the beginning, we started making improvements to our foxhole,” said Lt. Col. Nicholas Adler, commander, 197th FiB, and a native of Laurel, Md.
The 197th FiB took command of the CCC in December 2010. Their mission: to maintain and improve the living conditions of soldiers living in Zone Six.
“The Camp Command Cell is a diverse group of soldiers from multiple units from New Hampshire and Florida Army National Guard,” said Adler. “They had never worked together prior to deployment.”
197th FiB cased its colors before 1-34th BSTB uncased theirs, symbolizing the official transfer of authority.
“Today marks the official start of our operation. It is time to take the baton and run our leg of the race,” Lt. Col. Gary Mundfrom, commander, 1-34 BSTB, and a Spring Valley, Minn., native, announced in his speech to the two units and gathered guests.
Mundfrom had nothing but good things to say about the 197th FiB.
“I appreciate the fact that you are handing off a smooth operation,” Mundfrom said.
Under the banner of Third Army, the 1-34 BSTB is shaping the future of the CCC by continuing the mission of the 197th FiB to ensure the safety of Camp Arifjan’s Zone Six.
