FORT HOOD, Texas -- More than 200 III Corps soldiers deployed Aug. 5 to the Republic of Korea in support of Ulchi Freedom Guardian, an annual joint exercise that is designed to improve combined and joint operations between U.S. forces and the Republic of Korea forces.

Lt. Gen. Donald Campbell Jr., III Corps commanding general, will join his soldiers later in the month.

The 10-day exercise begins in mid August and is the first major training event for the Phantom Corps since returning from Iraq in February.

“UFG is important because it’s our first exercise coming back from Iraq during our reset phase,” Campbell said. “It’s an opportunity to really shake out the corps staff and to build the team again for whatever contingency we may face in the future.”

UFG helps reinforce and continue to establish a long-term commitment to South Korea, and will also assist III Corps in improving their capabilities to conduct full spectrum combat operations.

During UFG, III Corps will use computer simulation and multiple computer-based war-fighting systems to exercise senior leaders' decision-making capabilities through various combat scenarios.

Campbell and his III Corps soldiers participating in UFG will be available for interviews from South Korea via satellite.

The Phantom Corps will return to Fort Hood in early September and roll into another exercise, Unified Endeavor.

(NOTE: A combined operation involves military forces from two or more countries. A joint operation involves military forces from two or more services of a single country.)
