Clovis schools come to Cannon

CLOVIS, N.M. - The Airman and Family Readiness Center co-hosted the First Friday “Back to School Bash”, Aug. 5 at the Landing Zone here to give parents the opportunity to meet school officials.

At the event parents could get information about local schools, according to Laura Serrano, A&FRC school liaison officer. She said it was an effort to help kids in the community get ready for a successful school year.

The event which targeted newcomers, offered dinner to attending families, activities for children and time to ask questions or express concerns.

“It’s nice to see such a great turn out,” said Tanya Thompson, a military spouse. “Parents should take the time to get involved with schools to help children form a solid foundation for success.”
Being a child of a service member often means frequent relocation and transition among many schools.

“Parents and children frequently think of transitions like goodbyes,” said Serrano. “But in reality they are about learning how to adapt to a new environment.”

In keeping with the adaptation theme, the A&FRC provided information about how to help children cope with peer pressure, deal with bullying and stay safe online.

“We wanted to equip parents with the tools necessary to stay involved with their kid’s education,” said Serrano. “One of our main goals is to smooth the transition for kids not just here on base, but from grade to grade.”

Visiting school representatives provided helpful tools such as supply lists, assessment information and calendars to attendees.

"We really want to make sure that all our military families are well taken care of in Clovis, N.M.," said Terry Myers, Clovis Municipal Schools superintendent. "It is our job to make sure those families and their children are well adjusted."

Myers spent the evening meeting as many Cannon families as possible.

"It's nice to have the event on base this year because it allows for a much more relaxed atmosphere," said Myers. "We have a great program in Clovis, and we want to make sure everyone is comfortable within our community."

"By showing our school district’s willingness to be a part of an event like this, we are showing our desire to truly be a part of the Cannon community," said Myers. "I think it lets parents know that we really do care about the success and well-being of their children."
