NEW ORLEANS - Marines and sailors joined to mark the closure of Naval Support Activity New Orleans and the opening of Marine Corps Support Facility New Orleans during a ceremony here Aug. 12.
The Navy base closure and the Marine Corps base opening resulted from the Base Realignment and Closure Act of 2005. The law called for Marine Forces Reserve to move from its headquarters of the past four decades in New Orelans' Bywater neighborhood to its new location across the Mississippi River in Algiers.
The Marine Corps support facility is situated adjacent to the future Federal City campus, which will be located in the Naval Support Activity land once it ceases operation on Sept. 15.
The BRAC 2005 moves in the Crescent City are estimated to save taxpayers $35.3 million a year.
