MANHATTAN, Kan. - Senior leaders of the 601st Aviation Support Battalion attended a trust and empowerment class on the Kansas State University campus, Aug. 4.
“I like to do classes off site, because it gets my people away from their place of duty,” said Battalion Commander Lt. Col. Allan Lanceta, who taught the class. “They can concentrate on what is being taught and once the class is over they don’t feel they have to go back to work.”
Lanceta, who took command of the 601st ASB in June, wanted to lead the first class in order to show his senior officers and non-commissioned officers what he expects of them during future leader professional development classes.
“I want it to be a facilitated discussion. They don’t want to hear me talk about these slides over and over again,” Lanceta said. “Anyone can brief a slide. But when someone talks about their personal experience, as it relates to the slide, it is even better for the whole group.
“Their experiences are just as important as what is on the slides, and those experiences of trust and empowerment give credibility to the class, it gives the slides credibility.”
During the class several of the soldiers talked about how their previous commanders and leaders had trusted them with missions which should have gone to someone senior. That trust empowered them and made them even more determined to ensure that the missions were accomplished.
“It can happen to anyone in this unit. To be sent out on their own to accomplish a mission,” Lanceta told his soldiers. “That is why I want you to use this trust and empowerment. I didn’t get where I am in the Army without someone trusting me with certain things.”
