MOSUL, Iraq (August 31, 2006) –On Forward Operating Base Diamondback, Mosul, Iraq, 200 Chevy Trail Blazers sit in a parking lot waiting to be turned over to the Iraqi Police.
The new trucks were being turned over to the IP to help them to be able to perform their police duties more efficiently and replace their vehicles out of commission.
Recently, 20 of these vehicles were handed over to IP's stationed in Dahuk, Iraq. This is the first time that the Dahuk Police Department has received assistance from the coalition to support their mission.
"It's a big deal for the Iraqi police," said First Lieutenant Graham Erickson, 549th Military Police Company. "The vehicles will be used to provide security and support to the Iraqi police, Provincial Headquarters.
According to Erickson, the police force have waited a long time to get the vehicles and now the IP can see that Coalition Forces can produce and get them the equipments they need to keep providing security to the region.
"Giving the IP these vehicles has brought a lot of credibility of the Coalition Forces," said Erickson. "This region has gone without because Dahuk is not a key city or hot zone for insurgent activity. They were not a priority."
Maintenance of the new vehicles will be completed by the 549th MP; the unit has established a motor pool to give service to the IP vehicles. They will teach them how to maintain the vehicles to insure they last many years.
"I am very happy. Now we can protect the people of Kurdistan," said Col. Nehid Hussin, chief, emergency swat team battalion. "We thank the Coalition Forces for all their help in giving us the means to do our job."
