PARRIS ISLAND, S.C. -- On the day Americans bow their heads in remembrance, the city of Beaufort, S.C., and 20 local churches will hold a ceremony at the Henry C. Chambers Waterfront Park Sunday.

The invocation for the two-part ceremony will begin at 8:30 a.m. “Taps” will be performed by a city policeman at the exact time each of the World Trade Centers and the Pentagon were hit and again when contact was lost with the fourth plane.

“It was the day that changed our world,” said Donnie Beer, mayor pro tem for the city of Beaufort. “I don’t want anyone, especially our youth, to lose the magnitude of what happened.”

Beer said that this is today’s generation’s Pearl Harbor. The attacks not only brought the world into a long-term war, but it affected the entire United States.

“It was more than an attack, it was the day when Americans really and truly came together,” she added.

This unity will be represented as 20 churches of all religions across the Beaufort area join in a religious service following the city-organized memorial, including an invocation from a Navy chaplain.

Also, the Naval Hospital Choir will take part in the city’s service, ministering the songs “Freedom” and “He’s Able,” said Regina Kowitz, public affairs officer of Naval Hospital Beaufort.

Their performance was requested by the city, Kowitz added.

Along with support from the naval hospital, Sgt. Maj. Dwayne Farr, sergeant major for Headquarters and Service Battalion, will be performing “Amazing Grace” on the bagpipes during the city’s ceremony.

“Ten years ago, our country and Corps were forced to take immediate action against an enemy that threatened our way of life,” Farr said. “I was compelled to stay and fight, and now I still feel compelled to embrace the memory.”

Farr, who encourages everyone in the Beaufort area both in town and on base to attend, says it is a chance for the community to stop and simply remember why sacrifices have been made.

“Not to be compared to Pearl Harbor day but a very similar tragic event that has changed how we as America should always value our freedom and remember those who have suffered and made the ultimate sacrifices,” he added.
