CHATAN TOWN, Japan - Okinawa offers much to its visitors and residents, from beautiful scenery and rich culture to fine cuisine, but it is far from America and can leave Americans stationed here longing for a taste of home.
American Village, in Chatan Town, a cluster of restaurants, stores and entertainment, offers Americans an accessible mix of American and Okinawan culture.
“I think it is a great area,” said Pfc. Adam D. Christensen, supply clerk, Headquarters and Service Battalion, Marine Corps Base Camp Butler. “American Village offers delicious food and entertainment for family and friends. It is a good mixture of both cultures. (You can) experience both at the same time.”
The blend of culture and cuisine provides a good starting point for Americans new to the island who wish to start exploring but are not ready for the foreign streets of Naha or Nago, according to Lance Cpl. Jordan A. Chicano, armorer, Staff Non-Commissioned Officer Academy, MCB Camp Butler.
American Village is accessible to most service members due to its location near Camp Foster, a Green Line shuttle hub.
“It is close to the bases, so it is not difficult for the service members with no vehicles to get there,” said Chris Majewski, lead tour guide, Marine Corps Community Services Okinawa.
Accessible shopping, dining and entertainment provide an outlet for service members who feel cooped-up on base and want to get out and explore the island.
“It gets the military members away from base and into the community,” said Majewski.
The businesses of American Village do more than tailor their products and services to American customers, they accept American currency.
“Most places take dollars and most take (credit cards),” said Majewski.
American Village may be just the spot for military members and their families looking for an accessible mix of Okinawan and American culture for a few hours of exploring or even a day trip.
“It offers everything from restaurants and movies, to shopping and live entertainment,” said Majewski. “(My favorite part) is the Hokkaido ramen by the bowling area.”
Along with the bowling alley, American Village offers several arcades, a seven-screen cinema, a Ferris wheel, frequent live entertainment, karaoke and numerous clothing stores.
The myriad entertainment options, mix of cultures and accessibility to military members and their families makes American Village a great place to spend a day, whether you are new to the island or have been here for years.
