YUMA, Ariz. - Sen. John McCain visited Yuma Proving Grounds, Aug. 31 to speak with the senior leadership from YPG and the air station about pressing issues.
"[We] talked to Senator McCain about the different issues and initiatives and work that is going on here in Yuma, particularly as it pertains to the border issues, which he has shown an interest in," said Col. Robert C. Kuckuk, station commanding officer.
Another big talking point, according to Kuckuk, was the Joint Strike Fighter program coming to Yuma and the jobs it will bring with it.
"He has been very vocal of course, in what happens with the Joint Strike Fighter program, so we wanted to update him on what's happening with the building and construction and plans to be the first base to receive that airplane in the Marine Corps," said Kuckuk.
Col. Reed Young, YPG commanding officer, also briefed McCain with an overview of YPG activities.
"We were lucky to each get about 20-30 minutes to speak with the senator and update him with those things," said Kuckuk.
Before the sitdown, static displays welcomed McCain with equipment subject matter experts on hand to answer questions and discuss capabilities.
Some displays included the Apache helicopter, the manned or unmanned K-Max helicopter designed for cargo, M-777 155mm howitzer, armored vehicles and anti-improvised explosive device technology.
McCain also conversed with soldiers and civilians who work at the proving ground.
"He is an influential man and to have the opportunity to give him the latest updates is just good for everybody concerned," said Kuckuk.
