CONTINGENCY OPERATING BASE ADDER, Iraq — Soldiers with the 34th Sapper Company, 20th Engineer Brigade, gave a presentation to U.S. Air Force service members with the 407th Air Expeditionary Group on the capabilities and operations of the Buffalo on Contingency Operating Base Adder, Aug. 25.

The Buffalo is a military armored vehicle and allows soldiers to investigate possible improvised explosive devices from a distance. Air Force service members were given a hands-on demonstration of features from the soldiers, who do daily route clearance missions in the vehicle, instructing the course.

Staff Sgt. Alejandro Fonseca, Spc. Tyrone Clark, Spc. Randy Hook, and Spc. Nathan Olsen, guided the presentation, covering the Buffalo’s armor, interrogating arm, and the crow’s nest, a remote control turret designed to keep the vehicle’s gunner out of the fray.

“We take some of our expert guys from my squads and platoons and give a presentation on the capabilities, it’s function, and how we incorporate it to find and interrogate IEDs,” said 1st Sgt. Bryan Otero, non-commissioned officer in charge of the 34th Sapper Company.

“Anytime someone sees route clearance and wants a presentation, our guys step up to the challenge.”

The soldiers had previous experience demonstrating the Buffalo’s capabilities; they had recently given presentations to Gen. Llyod Austin, U.S. Forces- Iraq commander, and Lt. Gen. Frank Helmick, 18th Airborne Corps commander.

Chief Master Sgt. Kym Corkum, group superintendent for the 407th AEG, said that the demonstration helps promote joint service training and integration.

“Knowing that these are out there and knowing their capabilities makes us feel safer,” said Corkum.

Clark, senior crow operator for the 34th Sapper Company, said that giving these presentations helps expand his skill sets as a leader.

“It gives me the opportunity to spread the knowledge I have to other services.”
