MOSUL, Iraq (7 September 2006) -Iraqi security forces are learning a very important technique that could save their lives while out on patrol looking for insurgents.
Soldiers of Co. C, 5th Battalion, 20th Infantry Regiment, 3rd Stryker Brigade Combat Team, 2nd Infantry Division, are training Iraqi Security Forces to conduct military operations in urban terrain that will save their lives if ever put in the situation.
"The whole purpose of the training is to teach them advanced infantry combat skills," said, Sergeant Jesse Williams B Co. 5th Battalion 20th Inf. Rgt. 3rd SBCT. "We teach them military operations in urban terrain so that while on patrol the techniques they learn will keep them alive."
According to Sgt. 1st Class Michael Stow, senior instructor, Co B., 5-20 Infantry, the mission his unit has is different from the one they had back in 2003 when they were here. The last time they were here Iraqi Security Forces did not have the capability to conduct missions.
"This time around the shoe is on the other foot, we provide the outer security and the ISF do all missions with limited coalition support. They are doing the meat and potatoes," said Stow. "I am impressed with the ISF, they are good, they have an advantage over Coalition Forces working in each town, they know how the people operate, and they speak the language, and they don't require interpreters."
With the help of the 5th Bn., 20th Inf. Rgt., ISF is one step closer to being able to control their own destiny without the assistance of Coalition Forces.
"The training is to help the ISF develop confidence so that they can take over and we can leave Iraq," Staff Sgt. Omar Miranda Co. B, 5th Bn. 20th Inf. Rgt. "I think they are ready and getting better every day."
